Spring of 2016 I wheeled into the Lancaster Amtrak station, hoping for a “ping” on my iPhone for a Uber ride. No “pings”. Taxis and other cars all left the station. Just about ready to drive away and there it was; “Ping”.

A recent college grad who missed the train ran out of the station towards my car.

“I missed my train” Promptly got in the back seat. “Take me to Philadelphia train station, I need to catch the train there, hurry!”

“I’m not going to beat the train to Philly” I explained.

“Okay but hurry, just go!”, the grad replied in an Asian accent.

“Can you take me there? I have to be at 30th Street station before 12 noon”.

The time now was 11:10 AM.

“Sure thing, but I am not going to beat the train to Philadelphia, but we are on the way.”

I knew there was no way that I could get this young grad who missed the train to hopefully catch the same train sixty mile away.

Onto the PA Turnpike, made the turn on #76 and drove towards the city, but still a long way to 30th street station.

All this time the grad was speaking in an Asian language to someone on the cell phone in a far distant land.

The time now was 5 minutes to twelve noon.

I said, “we will not be at the station by noon.”

“Okay, then drive me to the Newark International Airport, I’ll have plenty of time there to catch my plane”.

I had just driven southeast from Lancaster to Philadelphia and now the college grad wants me to head north to New York city.

This was and remains my longest ride share ride.

One never know the destination until the person(s), enters your car.

That’s the fun part if you can handle it.
